D & D tie the knot.

You may remember D & Ds engagements photos that I did early in the summer. Their wedding was in September (I know I have been awful about updating the blog) & it was such an eventful day!

Ds Mother was so proud of her, you could see it in her eyes, hear it in her words. It was really a beautiful thing to see. Their ceremony was one like I have never seen before, there were very strict rules of where I could and could not go, and I learned when the real term, tying the knot, comes from. :)

D&D had the most adorable twins as their flower girls & an ever so shy ring bearer. During the formals shots it was absolutely freezing, but D & D had a very cooperative bridal party and we managed to capture some great shots...despite the creepy black cat that kept following us, trying to get under Ds dress.

I had way too many pictures to post....still have some from the reception to post (later).

D&D thank you so very much for including me in your joyous day. You are such a pleasure to be around, so full of energy, warmth and happiness!

I met the S family last year when I did their family pictures and I have to say when J invited me to do their family portraits for a second time I was thrilled. I was so excited I would get to see how much the children had grown...and coudln't wait to see if they would remember me!(K is in my banner at the top of this page)

K & M are two of the sweetest and most adorable children. We had a lot of fun playing in the leaves, looking over the bridge, strolling & giggling. Thank you J for sharing your family with me! Your family is fantastically photogenic and a true joy to be surrounded by.

Despite the fact that my flip flop (yes I said flip flop) broke during the shoot, and I took most of the pictures with only one shoe (sigh...hahah), I think the pictures turned out great!

Do you remember Baby R's birth portraits I did last year? I was thrilled when S contacted me last week to arrange family portraits.
We met in the hot hot heat today and had a great visit while I captured S and her beautiful family....

S & R have such beautiful boys....

C, the oldest brother, who reminded me ever so much of my oldest!

And here he is, Baby R!!! He is the cutest little thing. At one point he just started to laugh at nothing in particular, it was so hilariously cute!

Quiet L...adorable. :)

My favorite picture, thus far from the session. I know, I know, not your typical, studio, stiff, everyone look at the camera and say cheese boring family portrait. But I'm not the typical photographer. I LOVE this image. I love how S looks so calm and gorgeous, R looks happy, L is wondering what on earth the crazy photographer is doing trying to get everyone's attention and R and C are totally laughing and playing together. More importantly, I LOVE how it shows them as they really are.

Miss B is a very good friend of mine. She signed up to do Boudoir photos with us a few weeks ago. She said right from the beginning that she wanted to bring her headphones, which are fuzzy, I must add. She also brought along a stack of her favorite books.
I loved this shoot. It was such a pleasure to take her photos, and in such a way that totally made her personality shine through onto the images!

I've been trying to get together with M and her family since before Christmas, and something always came up on one of our behalves. So finally today I had the opportunity to meet with her and her lovely family!
It was so nice outside we decided to head to Rundle Park, where most of us (ahem J!) got our pants covered in snow up to our knees and then some.
There were skaters on the ice that little J really wanted to go and see so we climbed on the ice through the snow and snapped some great shots.
M, thank you for having me over today and then taking me to the park. You have an absolutely gorgeous family!!

Because the first marathon we held created so much demand we thought we'd have another boudoir marathon just in time for Valentine's Day!

Sunday January 25th, 2009 from 8 am - 4 pm. (Sessions are one hour - but arrive early as we have two Aveda Trained Hair and Makeup artists on site!)

Includes: 2 photographers time and talent, hairstylist, makeup artist , 5x7 or 8x11 (cost differs) - 20 page leather bound picture book of your best 20 enhanced images, proof disc & online private gallery.

We will have wine to help relax a bit and a few props you might want to use. My first post of the new year is a new baby!

I had been put on alert for a few months that baby C would be coming into the big world sometime in the new year.

She made her arrival on Christmas Eve!

Over the weekend I went out to meet her and her wonderfully charming family! She's beautiful, quiet, and so snugly.

Thank you for having me over, Mom and Dad. I'm looking forward to finishing your album and cherishing the snuggles I got from Baby C!

Happy Holidays!

Finally we have snow, and finally it feels like the holiday season.
I wanted to take a moment to say some thank you's.

This year has been incredible for me, absolutely incredible.

Around this time last year I found a post advertising photo lessons titled Dirty Little Secrets.
I'd been looking for lessons for a while and decided this one sounded perfect. Was within my budget, met my scheduling needs and the instructor's portfolio and knowledge seemed endless.
January (or February) can't even remember, I took my very first lesson. I parked (I was late, of course) and I saw an acquaintance,(whom I had thought was so nice but had lost her email address) walking up the stairs towards the classes too.
It seemed meant to be.
I was so excited!

We had our first lesson and I went home feeling inspired (by Hope, our instructor who continues to inspire and motivate me constantly!).
I attempted our first homework assignment, and frustration got the best of me. I put my camera up and decided not to continue with the lessons. I decided I'd email Hope (I have sent her sooo many emails since January 2008) to see if she could offer me any insight before I gave up. She quicklyemailed me back with suggestions and helpful tips. She got me right back on track to attempt to accomplish the assignment.
I persisted, and while I wasn't sure I would be good at photography I decided going to the next photography lesson was a must.

And I am so grateful that I did.

Throughout the lessons (January through May/June) I met so many good friends, who inspire me and push me to limits I didn't know I had, on a daily basis.
The Dirty Little Secret girls have become an amazing support basis for me.
My lessons turned into something I looked forward to , my photography turned into something I couldn't get enough of.

I've grown so much this year. I've learned that I have been missing something in my life....a creative outlet. Some of you know, some of you don't know...but I've always needed to be creative. I was a floral designer from 2000 until 2006 (still am one..always will be, but haven't been working as one). It always provided me with an outlet for any sort of thearpy I was needing (good and bad). It's so hard to describe how I felt when I would design flower arrangements....but I discovered this year, it's the same feeling I get when I take pictures.

I remember this summer I was hugely pregnant with Jax and my other two sons were driving me bonkers...lol. We went for a walk to the park and I brought my camera along.
I took these pictures. and discovered photography was now my thearapy. Photography was what I had been missing.

Hope, I cannot thank you enough for the amazing gift you've given me. You've helped me to discover a passion that I know will be with me forever.

First and foremost I am a mother to 3 lovely (yet very busy) boys and I’m married to a sweet, charming man who makes me laugh everyday.

I was born and raised in the Yukon but have come to appreciate the wide open prairies.

Ever since I was little I’ve had an interest in design and paid strong attention to detail in some way or another. When I’d play Barbie’s with my sister I’d decorate the entire house (right down to hanging pictures I had drawn with little frames, to rolling tiny rolls of toilet paper) and once the house was complete, I’d want to start all over, while my sister continued on with the Barbie’s story line.

I must have redecorated and rearranged my bedroom almost every second day growing up.

I never really discovered I was creative until after high school, when I was hired on at a local flower store. I fell in love with all of the possibilities there were in floral design and I apprenticed and worked as a designer for over 5 years (I miss it dearly....but have found a new love).

After my eldest son was born, I began to take pictures all of the time. I began to realize just how important photographs are, just how much emotion & memory a single photograph can contain, how quickly a picture can take you back to that exact moment and how much it related to the same elements as floral design.

After getting my first DSLR I began my journey with some amazing courses (and amazing people) which has led me to the now, and I am so grateful to be here!

Thank you for visiting my space on the web. I look forward to getting to know you & helping to preserve special moments with the ones whom you love.

Today I ventured out to the Devonian Gardens, where I met with T & S to capture their special day. It was a beautiful ceremony in a beautiful setting with 2 beautiful people. Their laughter and true sense of happiness is still with me as I process their pictures this evening.

Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

As some of you may know, I recently became an affiliate photographer with Now I lay Me Down to Sleep.
It is an organization that is near and dear to my heart.
I joined in memory of a special angel who touched my life deeply just over a year ago.
For those of you who don't know about this organization, please follow the above link to the website and find out more. For those of you who do know, please spread the word. So many people don't know about it, and too often the volunteer services get passed by.

Just after I joined the organization, I was contacted to do my first session.

Baby J was born still at just about 21 weeks to a very warm and loving family. He was so tiny, so precious and so very loved.
S & J, it was an honor and a privledge to have met Baby J. Your family will always be in my heart and thoughts.

A butterfly lights beside us
Like a sunbeam,
And for a brief moment,
It's beauty and glory
Belong to the world.

But then it flies on again.....

I didn't think I'd like taking pictures without colorful leaves in the background, or bright green and blue...but these pictures have proven me wrong. They are some of my favorites!

Baby R has arrived!!!!

Yesterday afternoon while I was getting my hair cut, Jeff sent me a pin to let me know S, a birth client of mine had called to say today would be the day. I was so excited! So, I quickly proceeded home to get things in order....kids to bed, batteries charged.....and then S called to let me know that they were on route to the hospital.
Something in my gut told me to go, possibly could've been anticipation, don't really know. I hopped in my car and got to St Albert in less than 40 minutes (not bad at all!).
Here are a few teasers....of course I need to go through them with Mom and Dad before I can post anymore.
My arrival time......where the contractions were coming steady, but S and R were still cracking jokes and chatting up a storm.
Beautiful Baby R still warm inside, waiting for just the right moment....

I couldn't help but find this poster amusing......look at those crazy faces on the side...

S's water broke....

And then baby R was born, with what seemed like ease, strength and great determination. Please don't mind the blurriness, I'm really going to have to learn how to properly focus while I'm bawling like a baby....

Look at how perfect his bits are. Here I go crying again. He has so much hair, and is so healthy and perfect in every way.
I am so grateful I was able to be a witness to baby R's arrival into this world...puts a whole new perspective on life again.

H & M

I met H & M (ohh..I just thought about those intials!) today at my favorite location. We began taking pictures and M mentioned they have a dog and he wanted to bring her along, but just wasn't sure. I asked what kind of dog it was, and they replied pitbull. Well, of course, my gaurd instantly went up, and I nervously said, "yah, sure run home and get her."
Well, much to my surprise, S was a doll. And really had they not told me her breed I would've never known. She was beautiful, didn't make a peep at me or other dogs (or even a squirrel) and she even sat perfectly for the pictures!

N was probably the biggest ham for the camera I've had yet! He was so great to work with. This family reminded me just how important Grandparents are. N gets to get a ride from his Grandma to and from school everyday! I can only dream my children would get such a treat.
The picture above, really speaks to me. N was telling a joke to his mom....the bond between mother and son, there is just nothing like it!

I just love this family.
You probably remember them from a few weeks ago, and they asked me to come over this weekend for a special request photo that we forgot to take during their session ( so to speak!).
Anyway, their girls welcomed me with open hearts...oh they are so great!

Birth Pictures....

As most of you know, I attended my first birth on Thanksgiving weekend. I just got goosebumps typing that out. It was probably the 5th best day of my life (my 3 boys, and my wedding, of course coming first).
I got the call on Sunday afternoon as I was watching the Business of Being Born with a friend from out of town (the irony in it....!). A's husband said, "we've been trying to get a hold of you all day, A's in labor". My heart skipped a beat. I had been waiting for the call for a few weeks already (A went over 2 weeks overdue). For some reason I just thought the call wouldn't come; it just seemed way too surreal that I would actually have the privilege of witnessing a birth.
But sure enough, here was the call. I quickly put down the phone and started packing my bag, telling my husband I had to run (and my understanding friends who were only here for the weekend, but they totally knew how important this was).
I rushed to the north side, crying and smiling along the way.
When I arrived A's labor was active but there was no real signs that it would be anytime soon.
I made myself cozy and quickly got to know A's mother and husband (who might I add are simply great!).
We watched tv, we whispered, we giggled.........
I tried to figure out my camera (even thought about calling you, H), but I just couldn't get it. I didn't want to use my flash as I just thought it'd be way too invasive. Needless to say the pictures aren't the best quality, but I think for the most part the memory is there.
Then at about 8 pm (I arrived at 4) A's water broke. Things picked up right away, and honestly some of it is a blur to me.
The doctor was on her way, A started pushing.......I threw my camera a few times........it was the most intense thing (other than my own labors) I've ever been a witness to.
And then.....the baby was born.
It was unbelievable. Truly. I cry just thinking about it.
A baby girl, Lillian.
I think I will forever feel a connection to A, her mother, her husband and A's amazing doula. But I think I will forever love and feel a deeper connection to baby Lillian. I haven't seen her since she was born, but I really can't wait.
So thank you A....thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing such an intimate time with me. I will forever feel grateful.

Fun in the park with the K's

Today I had my 3rd session with the K family. I did maternity photographs during the summer, and then I got to visit and take photographs of Baby E just a few weeks ago (if that).
And just this past weekend, the cold weather was put on hold, the sun came out and I had a great session at the park with this lovely family.

The Beautiful S Family

I met the S family through the clinic and I was invited out to their home to take some family/maternity pictures. M & T are expecting their third baby in the new year. I met Michelle, through Chantal to do family pictures for her and her family this evening. We really, really lucked out with the weather. Aren't her girls gorgeous? I had a blast playing with them at the park, they really tired me out! I managed to get a lot of great pictures! Here is just a little teaser. After my session this morning, I (and my family) met our family friends and their family (s) at the park to capture some family pictures. Lots of family in that sentence! After the family portraits, things quickly evolved into a leaf fight! Super fun! Hope you guys like the pictures...way more to come!!

I met C through the clinic and was thrilled when she asked if I'd do their very first family pictures with new baby E. I must admit I have a soft spot for red heads, and as soon as I saw E had developed red hair (I hadn't noticed on our other visits), I was smitten. I have hoped each of my three babies would be red, curly heads (like me!!), but my hopes didn't do the trick. So I'll have to stay in within close distance to baby E. Isn't he adorable?

Lesson in the Park

We met Hope, of Hope Walls Photography today for a lesson on metering, in the park. It was so much fun. My boys had a blast and the very best part of all????? The light bulb went on after Hope showed me metering.....ahhhh...I can't wait to play!!! Thanks again, Hope. You have no idea how thrilled I am!

This evening I had a maternity session with W & S, who are expecting their first baby in 10 weeks!! What a gorgeous, fun loving couple (just ask them about their wedding!!!). We had initially planned on a sunset shoot, but when we arrived the sun wasn't shining as much as I'd hoped. But we captured some great images, and started heading back to our vehicles. As we were chatting saying our goodbyes and getting to know each other a bit more.....W noticed the sun was setting!!! Yahhhhh....I'm loving the lens flare (you all know me and lens flare!!) and warm glow (even though W already had the glow!).

When things are meant to be......

I really feel that sometimes things are just meant to be. A few months ago, M (bride to be in these engagement pictures) contacted me about doing an engagement session. I was very excited. As months passed, M would send me nice emails of encouragement telling me that she thought my work was improving and she would compliment me on her favorites from my recent pictures.
I continued to get a good feeling from her.
Last week when I went to the corn maze, I looked down the long highway that went past the corn maze and thought, hmmm...I wonder where that highway goes to.
Sure enough this weekend I got to find out. I met M & W (one of the most geniune, sweet, down to earth, warm and happy couples I've ever met) in Tomahawk. We jumped in M's SUV, picked up W and headed out to our location (which they had scouted out.
Ohhhh...what followed was hmmm, how do I describe it? It brings goosebumps to my skin just remembering. We laughed, we got to know one and another, we told stories and they showed me their home...oh and I snapped pictures along the way.
H, you are sooooo right on so many levels....it's ALL about making a connection!
I can't wait to share!
But for now here is one.
This was the very first picture I took, and basically it's how our journey began!!!!

I'm just processing some pictures and I had to post this picture from the photo booth at the wedding I did over the long weekend. It was so much fun!!
Anyone need a photo booth? I'd love to do it again! One thing that was really cool is lots of groups of families came to get family shots together. I thought it was neat, because they were all dressed up, and the official photographer didn't have time to take all of the families individual pictures, so they just came up, organized themselves, and I snapped away! Now I can send them copies so they can remember the special day!

We went to Saskatoon this weekend and I did a photobooth concept for a friend of mine who got married.
OH, so much fun!
I had to share this picture. I learned a lot at the wedding....always have a backup (as mine died but lucky managed to make it work somewhat...but is now still dead) and learned a lot of what I'd do differently with a photobooth!

So now that I've sent you on a mad goose hunt, I might as well just fill in the blanks.
My amazing doula has been more than helping me with my photography business. We currently have a digital frame in the clinic waiting area with my pictures on a rotation, my pamphlets and business cards beside it)....and there will be more digital frames to come!
My hope is to work hand in hand with the clinic in many ways. I want to promote the importance of natural childbirth and help to educate the public, as well as to capture memories for the clinic and expectant families!
I'm thrilled, really!
However, I can feel how busy things are getting. I'm editing like crazy, learning new things like crazy (anyone who can help me learn to design photo cards in photoshop....PLEASE HELP!!! ), have photo shoots like crazy...and it's mostly done at night when the boys are sleeping.
I'm actually kind of looking forward to the weekend, as I won't be taking any editing things with me. Just lots of reading material (on natural childbirth, of course (I'm also helping the clinic write a newsletter), and my camera for a wedding photo booth in Saskatoon).
But it's a scheduled break with my family.
I'm inspired all over again!
Off to edit a bit more before I head to bed.

I had the privledge of photographing Abby and Brent's union on Friday, 8-8-8. Abby has to be one of the sweetest people I know. It was so easy to capture great shots of her. She was stunning, and everyone around her was so happy. It was a brillant day!

A friend of mine asked me to take some family pictures of them, and I was more nervous doing their pictures than any other pictures I've done before. However, these are some of my favorites. The entire family is so photogenic, and absolutely gorgeous (I'm sure getting to take pictures of lots of gorgeous people lately). When the kids left and it was time for a few of just the couple, it had to be the easiest time I've ever had taking pictures of people. They knew exactly what to do, and they are some of my very favorite pictures, I've taken to date!

When I attended Abby and Brent's wedding today to take the pictures, it totally slipped my mind that today is 08-08-08!
As we were knee high in the water getting some great pictures, I noticed a ctv camera lurking around us. A few times I had to politely ask him to get out of the way!
After the shoot was over CTV interviewed the happy couple...and it'll be airing on the news tonight!!!!!!
So if you have a chance, tune in to the CTV news at 6 pm!

Getting back behind the camera

It's been so long since I've posted on this blog, or at least it feels like it. I haven't been doing much of anything photography wise in the past few weeks, all thanks to the newest member of our family!
However, I'm going to get right back to work soon.
I have another opportunity to shadow a wedding next weekend, and Friday I am doing a wedding all on my own!!!! The weekend after that I'm doing family pictures and then a photobooth concept the last weekend of this month. And in September I have a sunset engagement session booked that could lead to a wedding next year.
I can't wait.
OH, and I have a brand new 10 day old baby I have to schedule in for some time with the camera!
We're heading out to the lake for the weekend, where I will be making some final decisions on a very exciting venture/opportunity that has been presented to me. I can't wait to share the details, and I will as soon as they are finalized (should be in the next few weeks). All I can say about it is it will be regarding something I'm a huge advocate for, and I know I will fall in love with my camera again and again!
I'm so excited to get behind my camera again. I got a new flash as a gift, so I have to start playing with that as well!
